Few limits on auto expression

Great bumper stickers, the kind that make you forget the traffic you're sitting in, are becoming rarer each year. And with the election over, there's probably even less incentive for people to smack something creative on their cars.

The irony, of course, is that modern technology allows us to boldly canvas whatever we want on just about any region of a vehicle. Why use a tiny Obama bumper sticker when you can affix a giant vinyl decal of the president-elect across your door, roof, hood, back window, or trunk? Heck, why not really show your support and get your whole car vinyl wrapped?

"You're talking about $1,200 to vinyl wrap a Smart Car. Larger cars will require more material, so the costs go up," said Orven Anderson, who does car lettering and vinyl wrap jobs for Elisign of Roslindale. "With a full vehicle application you can cover just about everything. Your vehicle is a driving billboard, basically."

It gets even better. Unlike traditional stickers, vinyl wraps come off without any damage to your paint job. Most of the wraps and vinyl decals Anderson makes are for businesses - name, address, company logo, and so forth. But he says you can easily turn any high-resolution digital picture into a decal or wrap, ?? la a fancy bus advertisement.

Want huge pictures of your children covering your car? Anderson can do that. Your pet photos? He can do that. Your favorite sports figure? As long as the car is for personal use, why not?

"It's pretty much limitless. You can do any design you want," he said.
