LSI president Mason Ezzell III carries on the family business.
Today, the business is known simply as LSI and, along with a sleeker operation -- the company sold its bindery division last year -- the firm has expanded its operations to include wide format digital printing, graphics, identification badges and software, signage and vehicle wraps.
"They went in a different direction and I think it's going to benefit both of us," said Ray Vick of Southern Bindery Inc., the company that bought LSI's printing division. "It was a great deal because we're not cutting into each other's markets like we were before and both companies are growing and expanding."
In addition to offering more products and services, LSI is also extending its customer base, both regionally and nationally.
For starters, the company has contracted with locally based ARS to produce and install more than 4,000 vehicle wraps for the firm's vans in 62 locations.
And LSI produces the banners for the Memphis Grizzlies that adorn FedExForum.
"Our people had the foresight a few years ago to realize the growth potential in these markets and we've been steadily targeting them ever since," said Rob Harrison II, LSI senior vice president. "We're doing more promotional materials and awards and installations than ever before and we've seen our profitability increase."
That's in part due to securing a contract with the U.S. Senate for LSI to provide employee identification badges and computer-security software.
"The Senate deal was a turning point for our company," said Britt Daniel, LSI executive vice president. "It gives us exposure on a national level and helps us proceed to the next phase of biometric identification credentials."
And there's interest from the U.S. House, Daniel said, about providing similar services there.
"We'll be able to adapt the program to their specifications," Daniel said. "I'm optimistic that we'll be able to get similar contracts with other companies to handle their security and ID needs."
Founded in 1975 by Mason Ezzell II, the company's day-to-day operations are now overseen by his son, Mason Ezzell III.
And the younger Ezzell is proud to carry on the family tradition.
"Due to my father's hard work and dedicated employees, we've grown from a two-person company to a multimillion dollar corporation," he said. "Even now in this down economy, we're doing our best to continue that growth and position ourselves as leaders in our industry in the 21st century."
